Which formula to use?

In the above sheet there is a table at lower part where top row is day and following rows have a letter in first column and a number in second row. There can be many entries of each day usually 1-3. What I want to do is it make a formula to the table at above the data table which will calculate the max of each letter per day
So result should be like

Press Ctrl+End to move to what Excel thinks is the last used cell.
This is not a good way to store your data at all. That said this works entered CTRL-SHIFT-ENTER

=MAX(IF($B$8:$X$8=B$1,IF($B$9:$X$12=$A2,$C$9:$Y$12)))
