I have a Data Validation list where the source is a defined range (Named). I though it was suppose to only allow a selection from the pulldown. But I am able to just type anything I want without any Error Alerts popping up. How do I limit the selection to my list?

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
Hi,

There a few settings to check:
  1. Make sure that the In-cell dropdown check box is selected; and
  2. Make sure there are No Blanks in your defnied named range; and
  3. make sure that the Ignore blank check box is selected.

If your allowed values are based on a cell range that has a defined name and there is a blank cell anywhere in that range, selecting the Ignore blank check box allows any value to be entered in the validated cell.

So either deselect Ignore Blank or remove the blank from the defined name

In the DV dialog, have a look on the 'Error Alert' tab make sure the 'Show error alert after invalid data is entered' is checked.
