I have a spread sheet that through out time (since 2002) people have entered part numbers into. i can do a count if function based on each different value. however, i want to be able to search for all versions at once. an example is one part number could be AD1234-cust and its entered that way or AD1234.

Best way to learn Power Query?
Read M is for (Data) Monkey book by Ken Puls and Miguel Escobar. It is the complete guide to Power Query.
If your part numbers are 6 characters long, maybe
=COUNTIF(A2:A23,LEFT(A2,6)&"*")
